Founded in February 2019, the Triangle Tolkienists are fans of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, including the legendarium as well as his academic works. Our activities include book clubs, watch parties, and gaming, as well as more casual social events. While we focus on Tolkien’s work, we also explore the mythology, literature, and history that inspired him.
Our virtual meetings are held via Discord, which functions as our members’ common room. Please join us there to discuss Tolkien and his works, help plan upcoming meetings, and get to know the community. That is also where you’ll find details about online gaming (particularly LOTRO), trivia sessions, virtual crafting nights, watch parties, and more.
Our virtual book club meets once or twice a month, depending on what we’re reading. Current and upcoming book club selections can be purchased at a discount from our local independent bookstore, Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh – just tell the bookseller that the order is for our club. You can also support independent bookstores by ordering a copy from Bookshop.org.
We’re happy to have first-time readers and re-readers alike. Our members come from a variety of personal and professional backgrounds, and everyone has something to bring to the table. There are no lore tests for admission here – though if you’re into that sort of thing, we’d love to have you at trivia! If you’re into Tolkien, you’ll likely find other overlapping interests within the group as well, and Discord makes it easy to discuss those other interests outside of our official meetings.
As of January 2023, we are registered as a Smial of the Tolkien Society.
We take breaks for two months of the year, once in winter and once in summer. If you join during a break, don’t worry – the conversation keeps going in the common room.
