TRD is upon us! Each year on March 25th (the date the Ring was destroyed), the Tolkien Society organizes a celebration to promote the reading of Tolkien’s works. This year’s theme is Unlikely Heroes.

As always, there are many events being held during this week, including a virtual option being offered by the Tolkien Society and the 2026 Soundscape Special. We will also be holding a casual event of our own in the Discord server.

On March 25th at 7pm eastern, join us at the Party Tree for a round of reading. Please find a passage from Tolkien’s writing that resonates with you and makes you think of unlikely heroes, then join us in the call to read it aloud. Don’t be shy – it’s a low-stakes and friendly environment! Video is optional.

Tolkien Reading Day

It’s also time for our third annual Legendarium Open Discussion! Join us for an afternoon of casual discussion and deep-diving. This is a virtual event this year, based on responses to the virtual vs. in-person poll.

Sunday, March 29, 2026 – 2:00pm

For this event, everyone should prepare a handful of open-ended questions or topics for discussion. Think book club questions, but rather than focusing on a specific reading, these can be about any subject related to Tolkien. Examples from previous years:

  • Do you agree with JRRT that LotR is too short?
  • If you could live anywhere in Arda, where would you choose and why?
  • Do you think Gandalf kept his “old man” form for the duration of the lives of the hobbits in the West?
  • Is The Lord of the Rings WWI literature?
  • What do you think happened to the Entwives?
  • How would you adapt the Silmarillion to a TV Show or movie?
  • Do you think the Silmarillion was authored by Pengolodh, or was it Mannish mythology?
  • What do you think happened to the Entwives?
  • What do you think happened to Dior after he died? Did he go to the human afterlife? Did he get reembodied in Valinor? Did he get to choose?

We’ll go around the group and give each person the chance to ask a question or present a subject, then we’ll open the floor for discussion. You won’t be expected to answer every question, only the ones you’re interested in; but I do ask everyone to bring at least a couple questions to pose. Otherwise, we might end up just staring at each other! Feel free to have your books available in case you want to reference the text.

Please consider sharing your discussion questions in advance of the event so folks can be thinking about their responses. You can post them in this thread.

Crucial note: Everyone is welcome to participate regardless of how confident or knowledgeable you feel about Tolkien. There’s no pressure to know everything, to not make any mistakes, or to not be confused about some things. Your thoughts and opinions are valuable no matter your background with Tolkien! And this is a great time to ask questions about anything you don’t feel you understand.
