This spring and summer, we’ll be revisiting The Silmarillion as a group. Whether this is your first time tackling Silm or your 20th reread, I hope you’ll join us!

Because this is a dense book with many topics to discuss, we are once again doing it as an intensive series. It’s okay to drop in and out as needed – this is a long stretch, and we all have lives to live! – but I encourage you to come to as many of the meetings as you can; and even if you’ll have other plans during a meeting, try to get through as much of the reading as you’re able to. In the past, people who have skipped readings within a series have later found themselves unable to catch up and dropped out of the meetings entirely. I’m really looking forward to getting the group together for these discussions, especially for the first- or second-time readers, so I hope you’ll stick with it!

Take note of the dates and selections below. The further out a date is, the less concrete it is; I’ll stick as close to this schedule as possible, but keep an eye on this post and on Discord for any updates that may need to happen.

All of these meetings are on Sundays at 7pm eastern time and will take place on Discord.

March 30Ainulindalë, Valaquenta, Of the Beginning of Days, Of Aulë and Yavanna
April 13Of the Coming of the Elves through Of the Darkening of Valinor
May 4Of the Flight of the Noldor through Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor
May 18Of Men through Of the Ruin of Beleriand
June 1Of Beren and Lúthien and Of the Fifth Battle
June 22Of Túrin Turambar and Of the Ruin of Doriath
July 6Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin and Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath
July 20Akallabêth and Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age

I’ve tried to keep the readings as short as possible while still giving us time to finish it before our summer break. It’s been a while since we’ve done this twice-a-month format for our book clubs, but it was very successful for our previous meetings on The Silmarillion, The Children of Húrin, and the Carpenter biography. Checking in every couple of weeks instead of once a month does keep the material fresh in your mind.

You can read any edition of the book. As usual, you can purchase a copy with a 21% discount from Quail Ridge Books in Raleigh; just tell the bookseller (or write in your online order notes) that it’s for our club. This is a good opportunity to pick up a pretty new edition with a discount, if that’s something you’re interested in!

For our virtual book club meetings, you don’t need a camera or a microphone to participate – most of us prefer to type. If you want to hop into voice chat during the meeting, you are welcome to do so, but the voice channel will not be moderated.
